“Us” Movie Review

“The feeling that we all feel we are the good guy in our own story prevents us from facing our demons.” –Jordan Peele

The latest horror film from Jordan Peele has finally arrived in theaters, two years after his first feature film “Get Out” became a cultural sensation and introduced us to the “sunken place.”

Theories about “Us” began as soon as the official trailer dropped in late December.

“Us” is a completely different movie from “Get Out” which is something audience goers should keep in mind. It isn’t as good or as groundbreaking as “Get Out,” it’s more of a standard horror film. “Get Out” is a slow burn. While the actions of the white people at the Armitage estate are scary, creepy, and uncomfortable throughout the film, the blood and gore don’t really start until Rose (Allison Williams) says chillingly on the stairs, “You know I can’t give you the keys, right babe?” and Chris (Daniel Kaluuya) realizes he’s going to have to kill every member of this family of psychopaths if he wants to get out alive.

In “Us,” the blood and killing begin earlier in the film.

WARNING: SPOILERS AHEAD (and some of the links contain spoilers too!)

At the beginning of the movie, we see a young girl named Adelaide (Madison Curry) wander away from her dad on the Santa Cruz boardwalk, and enter a funhouse with arrow reading “Find Yourself” pointing to the dark entrance. While she’s in there, the power goes out and she encounters a young girl that looks just like her. It’s not a reflection in the funhouse mirror; it’s her dopplegãnger. Adelaide is traumatized by this occurrence.

When the story shifts to present day, it centers around the Wilson family, including adult Adelaide (Lupita Nyong’o), her husband Gabe (Winston Duke) and their children, Zora (Shahadi Wright Joseph) and Jason (Evan Alex). They’re going to vacation in their family beach house near Santa Cruz. Adelaide seems happy and relaxed, until Gabe brings up going to the Santa Cruz boardwalk. Not wanting to revisit the site of  a major childhood trauma, Adelaide at first doesn’t want to go, but she eventually relents.

The Wilsons head to the beach, and Jason wanders off, which scares Adelaide. Back at the house that night, Adelaide tells Gabe about her childhood encounter with her dopplegänger in the funhouse and says she’s always felt like the other girl would come after her.

Shortly after this conversation, the power goes out. Then a family shows up outside of the Wilson’s house. They come face-to-face with their dopplegängers, clad in red jumpsuits.

The dopplegãngers, or “Tethers”, are clones who live below the earth’s surface (the beginning of the film reminds us that there are thousands of miles of abandoned tunnels underneath the U.S., from unused subway tunnels and old mine shafts). The shadow people are “tethered” to their above ground counterparts, and must do whatever their counterparts do. As Adelaide’s counterpart, Red, points out, it doesn’t matter that she didn’t love Abraham (Gabe’s tether), she had to marry him anyway because of Adelaide’s choice.

Where “Get Out” took on racism, particularly of the white liberal variety, “Us” takes on classism. And it shows just to what lengths people are willing to go to to keep their life and status in check, even if they’re aware of the suffering of others.

The Wilsons are clearly middle to upper middle class people. After meeting up with their friends, Josh and Kitty Tyler (played by Tim Heidecker and Elisabeth Moss), Gabe complains about Josh getting a new car just to get to him.

There are plot holes in “Us” that may frustrate some viewers, though I’ve found them fascinating. I’m not sure we’re supposed to have all the answers; I think this movie is designed to make you think.

The acting is incredible across the board. Lupita Nyong’o is getting a ton of well-deserved hype for her performance. The ease with which she goes from terrified mother to a hoarse, crazy-eyed woman with an evil laugh is truly impressive. The rest of the cast deserve credit as well. Winston Duke is great as the dorky, lovable dad (complete with Dad-jokes) in the film. The actors who play the Wilson children–Shahadi Wright Joseph and Evan Alex–both turn in excellent and creepy performances. Alex’s characters–Jason Wilson and Pluto–are perhaps the most mysterious ones in the movie. Wright Joseph is perfection, seamlessly going from typical American teenager to creepy as hell on a dime. Zora’s dopplegänger, Umbrae, wears a chilling smile that could frighten anyone. Moss and Heidecker are great as the bitchy, bickering, basic white friends of the Wilson’s.

I don’t want to go into too many other details, but I will note some things to keep an eye out for and things I thought were interesting in this dopplegänger tale.

  • “Us” being used as the title works in several ways. There’s the whole “Us vs. Them” idea, and the idea that “Us” equals U.S., which is intentional, according to Peele’s comments. It’s not hard to see how relevant that is today.

“The United States and our xenophobia was the front and center idea to grapple with.” –Jordan Peele

  • The white rabbit at the beginning of the film immediately brought “Alice in Wonderland” and the idea that we were following Jordan Peele down the rabbit hole.
  • As mentioned above, the family’s last name is Wilson. Jordan Peele does nothing unintentionally, so I have no doubt that’s a nod to the Edgar Allan Poe story, “William Wilson” which is the story of a man meeting his dopplegänger. There are other similarities between the movie and the Poe story–parts of this synopsis of “William Wilson” will be familiar to anyone who has seen “Us.”
  • One of the movie posters for “Us” features a pair of hands holding gold scissors–the weapon of choice for the Tethers. Two symmetrical blades, working together, with the sole purpose to divide things.
  • The reference to Hands Across America was interesting as were the visuals of a chain of people clad in red jumpsuits stretching across the land, literally dividing the country in half. Young Adelaide sees a commercial for it in 1986, at the very beginning of the movie.
  • Some of the murders are committed by boat and by golf club–two symbols of an upper class existence.
  • The song that plays during the scene in the car, “I Got 5 on It” by Luniz, is about drugs (despite Gabe’s objection in the film). It’s about splitting the cost of a dimebag. “I Got 5 on It” means putting in $5 towards it. Peele said it was an easy choice, with the movie being set in Northern California and Luniz being from Oakland, he also said the song had a haunting quality. The original definitely does, and now it’s even creepier, thanks to “Tethered Remix” done for the movie.
  • While Peele chose “I Got 5 on It” for the reasons above, there’s also a weird twist that fits in with the movie. The man who sings the hook, Michael Marshall, is practically forgotten and hasn’t seen any money from it.
  • Speaking of “I’ve Got 5 on It,” one thing that stood out to me when I saw the trailer originally was the character of Adelaide saying ” get in the rhythm,” yet snapping her fingers on the 1 & 3 instead on 2 & 4.
  • In the same scene in the car, Jason is wearing a “Jaws” raglan. A nod to another horror classic where the danger is coming from beneath the surface.
  • I also couldn’t help but think of both “Jaws” and “Cape Fear” during the scenes on the water.
  • When the Wilsons first arrive at their house–which sits right on a body of water that isn’t the ocean–Gabe tells Adelaide he wants to go to the beach at Santa Cruz. Wanting to avoid the place where she was traumatized as a child, she says “we have a beach right here” and Gabe says something about it not being a real beach, since it’s just on the bay and he wants to go the boardwalk. This intrigued me. My husband and I visited Santa Cruz on our honeymoon, so I looked up a map to figure out in what area the Wilsons were staying. I think I found the answer–Twin Lakes, which is about two miles from the Santa Cruz boardwalk.

Santa Cruz Twin Lakes Us Jordan Peele

  • When young Adelaide is in Santa Cruz with her parents in 1986, her mother says to her father, “they’re shooting a movie here, you should see if they need any extras.” The 1987 classic “The Lost Boys” was set in the fictional town of Santa Carla, but was filmed in Santa Cruz, with its boardwalk being used for many scenes in the film. Of course Peele designed it that way.
  • Jeremiah 11:11: “Therefore, thus says the LORD, Behold, I am bringing disaster upon them that they cannot escape. Though they cry to me, I will not listen to them.”
  • Kitty and Josh have twin teenage daughters, and there’s definitely a nod to “The Shining” in this movie. (Side note: The actresses who play the twins, Cali Sheldon and Noelle Sheldon, played Emma on “Friends”–as in, Ross and Rachel’s daughter. Man, do I feel old.)

I’m sure I’ve left out other “aha” moments and missed a bunch of Easter eggs, but these are the biggest ones to me. The bottom line: “Us” is great but it’s not “Get Out” great. The two will obviously be compared to one another, but “Us” is good on its own merits. I couldn’t wait to look up wild fan theories online after I got home. Here’s hoping we get a video of Peele discussing fan theories like he did for “Get Out.”

One way “Us” does remind me of “Get Out”–I haven’t stopped thinking about it since I left the theater.

Voting on the Sweet Sixteen matchups came to a close on Tuesday afternoon and eight movies were lucky enough to advance in our tightest round of voting yet. While there were still some clear winners, some matchups came down to the very final seconds before the polls closed. In the end, we were left with the movies we expected and our one cinderella finally fell.

Now we move on to the Elite Eight where each region will feature one matchup and the winner will advance to the Final Four. Each winner will also be given the title as best move from their particular generation.

Before we get to the Elite Eight matchups, let’s check out how we got here with a quick recap of the Sweet Sixteen.

Golden Region Sweet Sixteen Recap

Ariel and company held the lead for most of the round but a strong final push from Simba and friends gave The Lion King the victory.

Another incredibly close matchup but it will be Aladdin riding the magic carpet into the Elite Eight after a hard fought win over Belle and The Beast.

Classic Region Sweet Sixteen Recap

A strong showing from The Jungle Book finally gave Snow White and the dwarfs a run for their money but the princess will be whistling all the way to the Elite Eight.

A remarkable run from the No. 14 101 Dalmatians sadly comes to an end in the Sweet Sixteen as Lady and the Tramp pull away late for the victory.

Pixar Region Sweet Sixteen Recap

It’s been a relatively easy road for Pixar favorite Toy Story and that theme continued in the Sweet Sixteen with an easy victory over Wall-E to advance.

Not much drama in the Pixar region from either matchup as Nemo easily dispatched Toy Story 3 for a spot in the Elite Eight they will try and make it two in a row against the Toy Story franchise.

Modern Region Sweet Sixteen Recap

Elsa and Anna trailed early but were able to collect enough votes as the round went along to make it a clean sweep for the number one seeds once again.

A battle of tropical paradises went the way of Moana meaning we will have 1 v. 2 Elite Eight matchups in every region.

Our recap of the Sweet Sixteen is complete and all of the Elite Eight matchups have been set. Now, let’s get back to voting. All winners will advance to the Final four and hold the title of best movie from their respective generations.

Now is when the voting starts to get serious. The cream of the crop have survived two rounds of voting and will now face-off against one another in hopes of continuing their journey.

Before we get to the Sweet Sixteen matchups, let’s quickly review the Round of 32 voting from the Pixar and Modern Regions.

Pixar Region Round of 32 Recap

Nothing surprising about this result. Toy Story remains the odds on favorite to win this region and easily advances to the Sweet 16.

A tight, tight matchup between the No. 4 and No. 5 seeds goes the way of the (slight) underdog. Wall-E moves on to the Sweet 16.

Toy Story 3 picks up the second biggest upset of the Round of 32 with a victory over Monsters Inc. With the win, Pixar’s headline movie franchise now has two movies advancing to the Sweet 16.

Another easy victory for a high seed with No. 2 Finding Nemo making quick work of Cars to advance.

Modern Region Round of 32 Recap

Wreck it Ralph pulls off the minor upset over Tangled to book a spot in the Sweet 16. With the victory, three No. 5 seeds have advanced to the Sweet 16.

Still living the good life in Hawaii, Lilo and her alien partner Stitch have advanced to the Sweet 16 with a comfortable victory over Big Hero 6.

The final Sweet 16 spot goes to Moana in a runaway as she shuts out Kuzco and friends in their Round of 32 meeting.

Disney Bracket: Round of 32, Pixar & Modern Region

Screen Shot 2018-04-26 at 3.14.16 PM.png

Voting on the first set of Round of 32 matchups came to a close on Thursday afternoon and four movies from the Golden and Classic Regions advanced to the Sweet 16.

Next on the schedule in the Round of 32 is the Pixar and Modern Regions. Like the two regions prior, the four winners from each will advance to the Sweet 16 beginning next week.

Before we get to the next set of Round of 32 matchups, let’s quickly review the voting from the Golden and Class Regions.

Golden Region Round of 32 Recap

Another easy win for the top seeded The Lion King who took home 100% of the votes against Tarzan in the second round.

Our first of princesses in this region goes to Ariel as The Little Mermaid advances with a comfortable win over fellow princess Pocahontas.

Our second princess matchup ends with Belle knocking out Mulan for a spot in the Sweet 16.

Wrapping up the Round of 32 in the Golden Region is Aladdin flying past Hercules on his magic carpet for a spot in the next round of voting.

Here’s a glimpse of the Golden Region after the Round of 32:

Screen Shot 2018-04-26 at 3.13.19 PM.png

Classic Region Round of 32 Recap

Perhaps a little tighter than some expected but Snow White and her band of seven dwarfs overcame Peter Pan to move on.

Tough to call a five seed knocking off a four seed an upset but that’s exactly what The Jungle Book did in knocking off Fantasia to survive and advance.

We have a true cinderella story in the making now as 14 seeded 101 Dalmatians continue to shock the world with a dominating performance over Pinocchio to claim a spot in the Sweet 16.

There will not be a cinderella story for the actual Cinderella as she fell in the Round of 32 at the hands of The Lady and the Tramp. This sets up an all dog matchup in the Sweet 16.

Here’s a glimpse of the Classic Region after the Round of 32:

Voting on the Modern Region came to a close on Tuesday afternoon and eight lucky winners advanced to the next round.

With the Modern Region wrapping up its first round, that means we are now moving on to the Round of 32. First on the docket will be the Golden Region and the Classic Region. For this round, we will be voting on two regions at the same time.

Before we get to the Round of 32 matchups in the Golden and Classic Regions, let’s quickly review the voting from the Pixar Region.

Modern Region First Round Recap

No shock here as top seeded Frozen easily advanced to the next round, shutting out its competition in the process. With Frozen’s victory, it means all four top seeds advanced. Sorry, Virginia.

Planes was technically the lower seed in this matchup but it’s not a huge upset when a 9 knocks off an 8. Planes will have to navigate some wintry weather if they hope to keep advancing.

The beloved Pooh held a lead in this matchup until the waning hours where Tangled pulled off the comeback and survived an upset bid to reach the next round.

Incredibly, we made it through the entire first round with no upsets on the 5/12 line. Wreck it Ralph takes out Jack Skellington for a spot in the Round of 32.

Chalk continues to roll in this region with Big Hero 6 collecting enough votes to overcome a strong challenge from Princess and the Frog.

All dogs are good but Bolt was not quite good enough to overcome the adorable alien Stitch who advances.

Not even the great Charles Dickens was good enough to push his timeless Christmas tale past the Emperor and his new groove.

Moana could easily make an argument for a one seed but she had to settle for a two. Chicken Little pulled some votes but when the whistle blew the sky came crashing down around him and Moana moves on.

Here’s a glimpse of the Modern Region after its first round of voting:

Disney Bracket: First Round, Modern Region

Screen Shot 2018-04-19 at 6.40.37 PM.png

Voting on the Pixar Region came to a close on Thursday afternoon and eight lucky winners advanced to the next round but once again a tiebreaker was needed to settle one of the matchups

Now we continue are first round voting with the Modern Region that includes the likes of Frozen, Moana, Zootopia, and so many more Disney favorites that have captured our hearts in recent years.

Before we get to the matchups in the Modern Region, let’s quickly review the voting from the Pixar Region.

Pixar Region First Round Recap

No surprises here as the original Toy Story easily won over its own sequel by a comfortable margin. The 1995 instant classic put Pixar on the map and is the heavy favorite to win the region.

Two of the more recent Pixar films met in this 8 vs. 9 matchup but the results were not as close as the seeding may seem. Inside Out pulled away and will advance to the Round of 32.

Another lopsided result in the Pixar region sees Monsters Inc. move to the next round with a comfortable victory over Ratatouille.

There was argument that Coco may have been underseeded but being the newest of the Pixar movies held it back against the other longstanding classics. A tough match up in the first round sees Wall-E advance.

Finding Dory was another Pixar movie held back due to its recent release but fared much better than Coco. In the end, it was Toy Story 3 pulling out the victory by a nose over the lovable Dory.

Up! has one of the best stories of all the Pixar movies and that proved enough to lift it past Monsters University which is a strong sequel in its own right.

We mentioned this in the lede but here is proof that we once again have a tie in the voting for the second straight region. There was no separating Cars and The Incredibles during the allotted time so we had to send it to a tiebreaker.

For this region, we designated friend of the blog and Disney superfan Megan Bennett to be the deciding vote.

Her decision:

There you have it. Megan has cast her deciding vote for Cars, who will advance to the Round of 32.

Rounding out the first round in the Pixar region was Finding Nemo winning in a rout against Bug’s Life. Through three regions of voting, this was the first shutout where one movie claimed all the votes.

Here’s a glimpse of the Pixar Region after its first round of voting:

Before we get to the matchups in the Classic Region, let’s quickly review the voting from the Golden Region.

Classic Region First Round Recap

Another number one seed advances as Snow White and her band of seven dwarfs pushed past a litter of Aristocats to move on to the Round of 32.

Our very first tie comes between Mary Poppins and Peter Pan in an 8 v. 9 matchup which means we deferred the tiebreaking decision to friend of the blog Craig Bennett who Shawn and Robbie designated the official tiebreaker before voting started.

There you have it. Craig cast the deciding vote in favor of Peter Pan who will move on to face Snow White in the next round.

Continuing along, Fantasia squeaked past Alice in Wonderland for a spot in the next round of voting.

Another close call in a 5 v. 12 matchup but Jungle Book claimed the victory right at the wire to advance and set up a showdown with Fantasia.

Everyone’s favorite puppet boy Pinocchio fended off stiff competition from a potentially underseeded Fox and the Hound to claim a victory and advance to the next round.

Our first true upset of the tournament came courtesy of a 14 seed knocking off a 3 seed in a blowout. 101 Dalmatians ran poor Bambi off the court in this matchup and gives us a true cinderella story going forward.

Speaking of cinderellas, the actual Cinderella dropped the hammer on fellow Disney Princess Sleeping Beauty for an easy victory and a spot in the Round of 32.

Wrapping up the Classic Region first round of voting was another comfortable victory for a high seed. Lady and the Tramp trampled all over Robin Hood to set up a date with Cinderella in the next round.

Voting on the Golden Region came to a close on Friday and eight lucky winners advanced to the next round. Now we continue are first round voting with the Classic region including Disney favorites such as Snow White and Bambi. The amount of great movies in this region made it incredibly difficult to seed the movies in a fair manner.

Before we get to the matchups in the Classic Region, let’s quickly review the voting from the Golden Region.

Golden Region First Round Recap

Not much of a shock here. The Lion King is one of the favorites to win the entire tournament and it had no issue easily dispatching the 16 seed Mighty Ducks in the opening round.

Our closest matchup of the first round went the way of Tarzan by a single vote over the Hunchback of Notre Dame. Seeded at 9, Tarzan pulled off the only upset in this region but it was very minor.

Dominating performance from Ariel and the rest of the of The Little Mermaid cast over Rescuers Down Under. This was easily the largest victory in terms of vote difference in this round.

If you’re a 5 seed in any tournament you should always be on upset watch and Pocahontas was nearly the latest victim. Tigger came out guns blazing but as the tie wore on, the experienced and beloved classic eventually took control and advanced.

Another 1990’s classic fought off a tough opponent and survived the opening round. Mulan controlled the voting for most of the meeting and her popularity just became too much. Mushu provided some insurance off the bench.

All dogs are good but not good enough to pull off an upset over fan favorite Beauty and the Beast in the first round. Another classic showed up big time with a strong performance, taking home over 80% of the vote.

If one matchup had upset written all over it, it was this one but in the end Hercules summoned enough strength to move on. Goofy is one of the most recognizable Disney characters but his more modern self couldn’t garner enough votes.

Tying The Little Mermaid for largest margin of victory in this opening round was two seeded Aladdin who cleaned up shop against Fantasia 2000 for an easy win and a spot in the next round of voting.
